BIG DEAL
The Dodgers apparently pulled out of a deal that has been rumored for days. The deal would have sent Shawn Green, Yancy Brz(some vowels and stuff) and Brad Penny to Arizona. The BIG NEWS would have been the BIG UNIT going to the BIG APPLE, where he would have raised expectations yet again, only to see them dashed. (It is my theory that Alex Rodriguez will never win a world championship because his $252 million contract was so offensive that whoever was responsible for the curse on the Red Sox let that one go and focused their efforts on A-Rod.)
The Dodgers would have received some minor league talent, including a catcher to replace LoDuca (who we lost when we got Penny) and a guy that could have taken over at third base now that Beltre bolted for Seattle.
By the way, who does that? In baseball I mean. Of course lots of Los Angelenos moved up here (for example: me), which probably explains the traffic and the undending inability to put in a viable rapid transit system other than the ferries (and those were here long before we SoCals started migrating). But in baseball no one leaves the Dodgers for the Mariners unless L.A. sends them packing. Beltre could have had a six-year deal in L.A. and went for the five years in Seattle. Is it the coffee? Let me tell you, it’s not any cheaper here, not that I’m buying any anyway. I think John Olerud started it, only in reverse. He was stinking up the place here in Seattle so they cut him. He had to settle for playing for THE YANKEES. Poor guy.
As for the Dodger deal that for now, isn’t, I had misgivings. I like Green and he had a good second half, Penny got hurt but had done well and the guy with all the consonants had also done well. Nonetheless I like the idea of picking up young talent. I appreciate DePodesta’s decision to back out. It shows that he’s not making deals just to give the impression that the front office is working hard. Still, why can’t the Dodgers keep their free agents? The team doesn’t suck anymore. I guess I should prepare now for Gagne’s exit, which I think is scheduled for next year.

Dodgers draw Drew, dump Cora
At first I thought this was the Dodgers going after a guy who’s a lot of hat and not much cowboy. He was a prized prospect seven years ago, rejecting the Phillies in favor of the Cardinals (C’mon, do you blame him?) But looking at his career numbers,…
