To love the game
Ever since I saw George Will rip on the movie Field of Dreams I’ve wondered what it is that draws people to the game. I mean I always assumed it was that romanticized family aspect that hooked most people. Then again, maybe Bull Durham is closer to peoples’ hearts. You tell me. Either leave a comment here, or e-mail me at stvngrdnr@comcast.net. I’ll give you my reasons after I dismiss yours.

Field Of Dreams is a family type movie, while Bull Durham is more for the adult tounge for movies. There’s nothing wrong with either of them, it just depends who watches them.

To Miss Fantastick, my reason for asking the question is because baseball lends itself to the kind of romantic vision visible in Field of Dreams, yet in reality is the adult playground evident in Bull Durham. Field of Dreams wasn’t really about baseball, it was about dreams for a guy who longed for a relationship with his father and a bitter recluse reluctantly admitting he’d never lost his idealism. Bull Durham is about sex, comedy and actually teaches the uninitiated about the game and how it resembles life. In its own way it’s a romantic piece as well. I just think some people love the game for the dynamics of the game itself and perhaps for how it mirrors life (Bull Durham), and others love the game out of romantic longing (Field of Dreams). Some love the game for both reasons.
